Robert Löbel

Germany

Robert Löbel was born in East Germany, GDR, in 1984. Raised almost only by a grainy old TV and lots of animations, he decided to be an animator at an early age. After years of art school rejections, he finally started to study graphic design in Nosferatu’s hometown of Wismar on the Baltic Sea coast. Because of a lack of animation support he later moved to Hamburg and completed his studies with an animated short at the HAW – University of Applied Sciences, Department Design.

Wind, his graduation project and first solo work surprisingly won several awards at festivals worldwide (Special Mention (Young Animation) – ITF Stuttgart, Best Student Short – Anima 2014, Grand Prix Europese Studentenfilm – Holland Animation Film Fest 2014, Audience Prize + Special Jury Prize: Funniest Film - Int. Animated Filmfest KROK 2014 etc.). Under a lot of pressure, he produced two new shorts, Link and Island, in the last two years. Both premiered at the Ottawa Int. Animation Festival 2017, where Island got an honorable mention in the kids’ category.

Beside producing his own independent shorts, he works as freelance animator and illustrator for very important clients and gives animation workshops and lectures for very cute students, freelancers and kids.
